In Strings, the principal dancer of the London Royal Ballet, Ivan Putrov, is literally suspended in the air by imperceptible wires in the obscurity of the classical architecture of the Royal Opera House. Under the dancer’s naked body, four musicians play Tchaikovsky’s second movement for string quartet. In her videos, as in her panoramic photographs, Sam Taylor-Wood fixes a
situation, a scene, a moment. The apparent precariousness of the situation provokes a feeling of fascination in the viewer, coupled with troubling and distressing sensation induced by the fragility and vulnerability of body and being.
