Diana Thater’s video projections propose an experience of the intersection of time (the time of the video) and space (the architecture on which the images are projected). For the projection White is the Colour, white clouds slowly appear and disappear on the walls, corners and ceiling, as if redrawing space. Perception is intensified by the presence of a fluorescent light placed on the floor: the beam of light creates shadows of the spectator which plays over the walls. Although the projection evokes associations with the supernatural skies in landscape paintings, it turns out to be the huge clouds of smoke over Los Angeles during the forest fires of 2001. Thater emphasises the place and presence of the visitor by moving images of that event to another location, while physical museum architecture and projection equipment are part of the work.
