The exhibition Journey of a Thousand Miles presents a selection of 13 video installations at the Center for Contemporary Art (CAC) in Quito that are part of the Commissions and Awards Programme of the Han Nefkens Foundation. The exhibition highlights the work of eleven contemporary artists and an artistic trio from South Korea, Georgia, Iran, the United States, Vietnam, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Kenya and Turkey.

Following the exhibition In search of Global Poetry, inaugurated at the CAC Quito in August 2017, the Han Nefkens Foundation and the CAC began an inter-institutional collaboration that led them to organise the Han Nefkens Foundation - CAC Video Art Production Award for Latin American artists, awarded to the Ecuadorian artist Adrián Balseca in 2018. In the latest exhibition, works by artists that have been recognised in recent years will be exhibited.

Each of the works presented by the artists passionately develop contemporary discussions from different approaches. The invited artists construct a line of thought that addresses problems related to the concepts of migration, violence, memory, nature, the environment and technology. They explore the complex ways in which the notions of identity, subjectivity and territory, approached from contemporary art, function as instruments for an organic inclination towards other ways of creating symbolic universes and understandings.

The selected works thus provide a cultural vision from different geographies and allow us to clearly understand the ways in which the production of contemporary art is used to express attitudes, political positions and experiences related to the ways of being in the world.

Like a journey of a thousand miles, the works reveal the sensitive, the unspoken, the myriad of blind spots, and put them right in front of us. As Erling Kagge wrote, ‘the secret to walking to the South Pole is to put one foot in front of the other, and to do this enough times’.
