Connecting people through art 

The Han Nefkens Foundation is pleased to extend the invitation to the artist talk with Panos Aprahamian, recipient of the Han Nefkens Foundation – Museu Tàpies Video Art Production Grant 2024, in conversation with Indranjan Banerjee, Curator at Art Jameel.

The conversation will focus on The Karantina Trilogy, a body of work comprising three films made between 2021 and 2025 that trace the ecology, memory and contested histories of Karantina, Beirut's former quarantine district. Situated at the mouth of the Beirut River, Karantina occupies a liminal position—at once central to the city and beyond its margins—and bears witness to intertwined histories of political and ecological violence.

Moving between documentary and fiction, Aprahamian examines forms of extraction and brutality inflicted on human and nonhuman bodies, as well as on Beirut's waterways, creating a cinematic language where history, speculation and environmental realities converge.

The talk accompanies the screening of The Karantina Trilogy at Jameel Arts Centre, on view from 1 July to 14 September 2026.

The trilogy culminates with More Spilled Blood Than Drinkable Water (2025), produced by the Han Nefkens Foundation in collaboration with Museu Tàpies (Barcelona), Jameel Arts Centre (Dubai), Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) (Manila), NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, WIELS (Brussels), and Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina – MADRE (Naples).


About the artist
Panos Aprahamian (b. 1986) is a Berlin-based unfiction filmmaker, media artist and writer from Beirut's peripheral rustbelt. Through image, sound and language, his practice explores the spectral presence of the future-past in undead bodies, sacrifice zones and social relations. He studied at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts and the University of the Arts London, graduating with an MA in Documentary Film in 2015. Aprahamian was a Caspian Arts scholar in 2015 and a fellow at Ashkal Alwan's Home Workspace Program (2017–2018). He received the Ecumenical Prize at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival in 2022, the Eliza Moore Fellowship for Artistic Excellence in 2024, and is the recipient of the Han Nefkens Foundation – Museu Tàpies Video Art Production Grant (2024–2026). He currently teaches in the Media Studies Program at the American University of Beirut.
