Masters of Change. Masterclass

Han Nefkens Foundation Master Class Master of Change (Arnhem, The Netherlands)

30 May - 3 June 2018

Arnhem, The Netherlands

Through an international Open Call between 1 July and 31 October 2017, designers, NGO's and artists were invited to submit ideas and products for State of Fashion 2018 | Searching for the New Luxury. We made a call for ideas that, in connection with the theme and question of State of Fashion, offer new perspectives on the fashion system and the way we deal with the things that surround us that we use. Thanks in part to the network of scouts from the Prince Claus Fund, but also through international contacts of the curator and the organisation, as well as via social media, we were able to reach participants in Asia, Africa and South America. By 31 October we had received one hundred submissions. The best ideas will be included in the exhibition, and the selected entrants will be invited to the master class 'Masters of Change' in Arnhem during the opening weekend of State of Fashion 2018.

The winners were selected by an international jury consisting of: Han Nefkens (Han Nefkens Foudation), Johan Maris (Control Union), Joumana El Zein Khoury (Prince Claus Fund), Corinna Gardner (V & A Museum), Hakan Karaosman (Politecnico Milano) and curator José Teunissen. It concerns the following designers:

-Rafael Kouto - ALL THE NOTHING THAT WILL REMAIN -Matti Liimatainen - Self-Assembly

-Anneke Hymmen & Kumi Hiroi - Remodeling

-Button Masala - Button Masala for Craft

-11.11 - The Khadi Way

-Kristina Walsh - Footwear Beyond the Foot. Extensions -Elisa van Joolen - Portal

During their stay, we offer these designers a platform for their ideas during the Fashion Colloquium (31 May and 1 June) in collaboration with ArtEZ, and bring them into conversation with experts and peers during a master class (2 June). For this master class, we want to link these 'new' masters of change to the group designers that participated in the workshop in Atelier Néerlandais in 2016. Under the guidance of José Teunissen, Luca Marchetti, Han Nefkens, Hakan Karaosman and other experts, they will start working and enter into conversation. With each other, but also with the audience of State of Fashion in a debating session. The theme of the conversation is how these designers are 'drivers of change' and how they develop innovations within the fashion industry. What are the new values and what does luxury mean in relation to their projects and practices? What does this mean for business models, production processes and the role of the designers? In addition to those selected through the Open Call, the five French and five Dutch talents from 2016 are again invited to share their knowledge and experience.
